Basque Country Towns & Villages

Basque Country is characterized by a rich culture and tradition. From charming ancient villages to lively cities with modern architectural wonders, it’s worth a visit. Not to mention the breathtaking landscapes and natural beauty found in the Basque countryside.

Okay, but where is Basque Country exactly? The region is an autonomous community in northern Spain. However, it sits on the border of France and has four provinces in Spain and three provinces in France.

Basque Country is locally known as País Vasco, Spain (the land of the Basque Speakers). It has its own language and culinary delights that are unique from both Spain and France. So, let’s find out a little more about this fascinating area by exploring the best towns and villages.

Must-See Towns in Basque Spain & France

From Gothic architectural wonders to coastlines loved by surfers and beachgoers, the region has many gems. These are some of the best towns in Basque Country.

Bayonne

Bayonne boasts Gothic architectural delights around the city, with the most awe-inspiring being the Bayonne Cathedral and Cloister. It’s worth spending a few moments marvelling at the impressive structure. You’ll also find influences of traditional Basque styles lining the streets. This mix gives Bayonne a unique character.

The town is perhaps most famous for its bullfighting, attracting tourists each year to witness the event. It’s also known historically as the French capital of chocolate, and you’ll have loads of opportunities to sample the delicious goods at the Bayonne Chocolate Factory.

Bayonne was awarded the French accolade of ‘Town of Art & History’ in 2012, and it’s not hard to see why. A visit to the Basque Museum Bayonne will take you on a journey of the incredible cultural heritage that still runs strong through the town.

Biarritz

Straddling the two countries of France and Spain, Biarritz technically lies on the French side of the Basque coast. A favourite spot among surfers, foodies and beach lovers, the area also boasts traditional and cultural charm.

This seaside town has been a popular destination dating back many years. In the 18th century, it became a pilgrimage site, famous for the healing properties found in the miraculous water. It has attracted royalty since the 1800s and remains a popular beach and holiday destination today.

This perfect coastline hosts the Biarritz Surf Festival each year. The festival was founded in 1993 at the Côte des Basques surfing spot and is one of Europe’s most prominent surfing competitions. Even if you can’t stand up on a board, it’s worth heading out to watch elite surfers on the waves.

Saint Jean de Luz

Also located on the French coastline of Basque Country, Saint Jean de Luz doesn’t only offer endless blue waters and rocky cliffs. It’s also a haven for foodies and history buffs alike.

Roam the idyllic streets dotted with traditional wooden houses in the historic centre of Saint Jean de Luz. Start on the main street of Rue Gambetta and as you explore you’ll come across some impressive monuments. This includes Louis XIV Square with the historic Town Hall, as well as the home of Louis XIV, dating back to the 17th century.

To test out the local delicacies of the area, head to the Rue de la République. The street is teeming with small taverns and restaurants that serve up the most delicious traditional recipes. La Taverne Basque will give you a down-to-earth and authentic experience, while Michelin-starred Le Kaiku offers more fine dining options.

Best Inland Villages in Basque Country, Spain & France

Basque Country is also home to some exceptional villages that give you a glimpse into the past. With traditional Basque architecture and quaint village streets, you’re in for a whimsical experience with these great inland spots.

Ainhoa

You’ll feel as though you have been transported back in time with a visit to this charming village and its traditional Basque half-timbered homes. These are gorgeous buildings with red roofs and shutters against remaining white exteriors that give the area character. The fortified village is built around one long main street, making it easy to explore.

Founded in the 13th century and partially rebuilt in the 17th century, this village is seeping with history. The 13th-century church, Notre Dame de l’Assomption, is worth putting at the top of your list. The bell tower with four floors is simply exquisite, and the golden altar in the interior of the church will not disappoint.

Sare

Just 14 kilometres from the coast, you’ll find the enchanting village of Sare. Step back into the 15th century with the traditional architecture of half-timbered farmhouses and sloping roofs. The majestic mountain, La Rhune, is situated just four kilometres from the village and acts as a backdrop to the already gorgeous scene of the town.

A tour of the 17th-century Ortillopitz House will give you a real taste of what life in Basque used to look like. You’ll journey through the cider cellar, large kitchen, office, bedrooms and attic of the house, as well as the orchard and traditional vegetable garden.

Other notable attractions in Sare include the magnificent church of St Martin with oak galleries, the caves of Sare, and the pelota court.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

This unspoiled village is surrounded by lush green landscapes and is a great destination for those who also want to explore these landscapes. It’s also famous for being one of the traditional starting points for the Way of St. James, which is the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

From the cobbled main street of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, you can admire 16th and 17th-century houses and architecture. For more breathtaking views, head to the citadel. Here you’ll have panoramic views of the surrounding green Valley of St Jacques and the mountains.

The gothic Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont Church is another attraction that cannot be missed. The sheer beauty of the building will leave you mesmerized.
